Dairy: Central loosens, the East is heavy, and hauling is the complaint
More milk, same freight headaches.
USDA’s Dairy Market News says supplies are heavy in the East and light to moderate in the Central and West regions. Central milk is loosening, though spot loads are still limited. Cream is heavy in all three regions. School sessions keep Class I demand moving, and yogurt is holding up Class II as ice cream production starts its seasonal decline.
The freight line is the part to watch. Central contacts report ongoing distribution challenges nationwide, attributed to elevated fuel costs, and Western stakeholders say increasing hauling rates are presenting more challenges (USDA). National diesel fell 18.3 cents to $6.199 for the week of October 5, after this report’s week closed. California is still $8.082.
D1 · Wisconsin / Minnesota dairy → Northeast
FlatCentral loosening; the East has plenty.
- Week over week: Central milk supplies loosening, with spot availability still limited (USDA). Last week Central was tight. East supplies heavy; Class I, II and III demand unchanged; East market tone steady.
- Breadth: Central loosening, East heavy, cream ample in both.
The Northeast doesn’t need to pull as hard from the Midwest when its own milk is heavy. Spot milk is still limited in the Central region, so weekend coverage is not a giveaway. Book it on your normal lead time.
D3 · California Central Valley dairy → West Coast metros
FlatNeither loose nor tight.
- Week over week: California spot milk loads neither loose nor tight; some spot loads traveling to neighboring states (USDA). West Class I and II demand stronger.
- Breadth: West production generally steady. Arizona tight, with manufacturers bringing in spot loads of milk and condensed skim.
California spot loads are crossing state lines while Arizona manufacturers bring milk in. Western contacts flagged rising hauling rates. California diesel at $8.082 is still the highest on the board.
D4 · Idaho / Utah dairy → West Coast / Midwest
FlatThe Intermountain squeeze eased.
- Week over week: Pacific Northwest milk production balanced with processing capacity; Idaho spot loads somewhat available (USDA). Last week PNW and Mountain spot milk was very limited. Spot loads are still not abundant in the lower Mountain States.
Last week’s tight Intermountain read loosened. Cream and fluid are still not the same truck.
What this means for shippers this week
- Upper Midwest to the Northeast: hold steady. Central is loosening and the East is heavy. Keep normal lead times on weekend cover.
- Upper Midwest to the Southeast: build in a day. Hurricane Isaias is forecast to bring heavy rain across the Southeast and the Tennessee Valley this weekend (National Hurricane Center). Fluid milk doesn’t wait out a flooded interstate. Have a backup receiving window.
- California and the Mountain West: hold steady, watch hauling. Supply balanced, Arizona pulling spot loads, and Western contacts calling out rising haul costs. Reset fuel to the October 5 EIA print.
- Shelf life decides the truck. Fluid and soft cheese don’t forgive a late truck plus a temperature excursion. Pay for the carrier who runs these appointment patterns every week.
